When it comes to the featherweight class of the Rizin Fighting Federation, the name Mikuru Asakura (Asakura Mikuru, born 15 July 1992) is one to know. Since 2012, he has become a professional fighter, and he has fought for the likes of DEEP, the Fighting Network Rings, and the Road Fighting Championship.

He has won titles in the 143- and 154-pound divisions of Fighting Network Rings. In addition to his success in MMA, he has become a well-known YouTuber in Japan.

Life

After first taking up karate as a hobby in elementary school, Mikuru also played volleyball for three years.

Both Mikuru and his older brother Kai Asakura were frequent participants in violent street battles as children. A therapist recommended their mother enrol them in boxing courses when they were older.

The Asakura brothers’ introduction to MMA came at Zen Dokai Toyohashi Dojo, which was located near their high school in the city of Toyohashi in the Japanese prefecture of Aichi.

In 2012, as part of the DEEP promotion, Mikuru Asakura made his professional debut, facing off against fellow rookie Morikazu Itagaki. Within 53 seconds, Asakura had finished his opponent with a technical knockout. Following a three-year absence from the sport, Mikuru returned to compete in a spinoff of the Fighting Network Rings organization called Outsider.

At The Outsider 26, in just his second professional fight, he fought Keinosuke Yoshinaga, whom he knocked out in the first round by technical knockout to win the Outsider 154 lbs Championship.

At The Outsider 38, four months later, Asakura finally won the 143-pound title by defeating Takehiro Higuchi, the only guy to have ever beaten him. Nine months later, at The Outsider 42, Asakura will defend his 143-lb championship against Hiroyuki Furuta before taking the stage in ROAD FC. At Road FC 37, held under the aegis of the Road Fighting Championship, Asakura faced Doo Seok Oh and won through a first-round technical knockout.

During Road FC 43, Asakura will have his first career defeat, a unanimous decision loss to journeyman Kil Woo Lee.

Six months later, however, at DEEP 83 Impact, he bounced back with a unanimous decision win against Kosuke Terashima.

Federation of the Rizin Fighting Arts

The 12th of August, 2018, saw Mikuru Asakura make his Rizin debut. Asakura’s opponent was Hatsu Hioki, a Japanese MMA veteran, and the former Shooto featherweight champion. At 3:45 of the first round, Mikuru knocked Hioki down with a head kick and finished the bout off with punches.

At Rizin 13, Asakura then competed against Karshyga Dautbek. Asakura defeated his Kazakh opponent by a unanimous decision because of his superior grappling and hitting.

During Rizin: Heisei’s Last Yarennoka!, former Shooto Featherweight Champion Mikuru Asakura faced off against Takeshi Inoue. Asakura knocked out his opponent, the previous champion, with a well-placed knee.

In his next bout, Mikuru Asakura was scheduled to face Luiz Gustavo at Rizin 15. The judges gave him the win by a landslide against Gustavo.

He will be making his RIZIN debut in the main event of Rizin 17 against fellow Rizin superstar Yusuke Yachi. This battle was different from all the others since both competitors said they couldn’t stand each other before the fight even started.

Yachi said that Asakura was terrified of him, while Mikuru called Yachi stupid and stated that the videos he uploaded to YouTube were “crap.” Asakura won by knockout in the last seconds of the fight and by unanimous decision.

Asakura has won five consecutive fights, therefore Rizin is giving him a shot against one of Bellator’s competitors at the next Rizin 20 event. Asakura defeated John Macapa, a former competitor on The Ultimate Fighter Brazil’s Team Wanderlei, by a unanimous decision. This was Macapa’s fifth career loss in 30 bouts.

At Rizin 21, Asakura met Daniel Salas, a member of Team Gastelum on The Ultimate Fighter: Los Angeles Season 2. Asakura hit a head kick and then finished the fight with punches at 2:34 of the second round.

Asakura’s undefeated record (7-0) and rising popularity led Rizin to book him in a championship bout against Yutaka Saito, the current Shooto Featherweight Champion, at Rizin 25. In his third championship match, Asakura was defeated by a unanimous decision.

Asakura bounced back from his initial defeat to compete at Rizin 26’s annual New Year’s Eve concert. He fought Satoshi Yamasu and earned a technical knockout in the first round thanks to a combination of his signature head kick and a barrage of punches.
