After first taking up karate as a hobby in elementary school, Mikuru also played volleyball for three years.
Both Mikuru and his older brother Kai Asakura were frequent participants in violent street battles as children. A therapist recommended their mother enrol them in boxing courses when they were older.
The Asakura brothers’ introduction to MMA came at Zen Dokai Toyohashi Dojo, which was located near their high school in the city of Toyohashi in the Japanese prefecture of Aichi.
In 2012, as part of the DEEP promotion, Mikuru Asakura made his professional debut, facing off against fellow rookie Morikazu Itagaki. Within 53 seconds, Asakura had finished his opponent with a technical knockout. The 12th of August, 2018, saw Mikuru Asakura make his Rizin debut. Asakura’s opponent was Hatsu Hioki, a Japanese MMA veteran, and the former Shooto featherweight champion. At 3:45 of the first round, Mikuru knocked Hioki down with a head kick and finished the bout off with punches.
At Rizin 13, Asakura then competed against Karshyga Dautbek. Asakura defeated his Kazakh opponent by a unanimous decision because of his superior grappling and hitting.
During Rizin: Heisei’s Last Yarennoka!, former Shooto Featherweight Champion Mikuru Asakura faced off against Takeshi Inoue. Asakura knocked out his opponent, the previous champion, with a well-placed knee.
In his next bout, Mikuru Asakura was scheduled to face Luiz Gustavo at Rizin 15. The judges gave him the win by a landslide against Gustavo.
